Child Support is calculated differently in each state. Some of the major elements of calculations for all states include incomes of the parents, number of overnights, health care, day care, and other related costs of the children. Child Support in the State of Oregon at a base level is determined by the Child Support Calculator maintained by the state. The main drivers of these calculations is overnight stays and salaries of the parents. Other factors come into play like health insurance and child care costs to influence the final numbers. However, the State of Oregon, nor any other state, is not interested if your children play sports, take piano lessons, ride horses, or any number of other activities. We ask this question in mediation, “How do you want your children to live?” Most parents wish to keep the level and type of activity children currently enjoy static, or close. The reality for parents is the budget will need to stretch to two households instead of one. Some activities may need modified or eliminated. In mediation, we build cash flow budgets to ensure both parties can go forward with sufficient funds and take care of the children.
Child Support as well as Parenting Plans often change because of significant changes in life. Jobs are gained and lost. Children grow and develop. Whenever there is a significant change is circumstance, support may be recalculated.
